FCT Minister flags off solar-powered streetlight project in Abuja
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday flagged off the Light Up Abuja Project: Lots I & II, aimed at transforming street lighting in key districts of the capital city and major expressways.
Under Lot 1, the project will cover Maitama, Central Area, Wuse, Asokoro, and the Airport Expressway, while Lot 2 will focus on Katampe, Katampe Extension, Jabi, Garki, Gudu, and Mabushi.
The initiative involves the supply and installation of integrated hybrid solar-powered streetlights, featuring 300W Zolar-powered fittings with luminous flux between 7,500lm and 17,500lm. It also includes retrofitting existing systems, providing galvanized poles for new locations, and replacing vandalized or damaged poles.
Each streetlight will be fitted with a surveillance module, linked to a centralized control room to monitor and deter vandalism.Â
According to the FCT Administration, the project will be completed within six months, marking a major step toward sustainable urban lighting and improved security in the capital.
