Rivers safe, ready for business – Fubara dismisses claims of insecurity

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dismissed recent media reports suggesting that the state is unsafe, describing such claims as misleading and politically motivated.

Speaking on Sunday night at an Amateur Golf Championship in Port Harcourt, the governor said the impressive attendance of guests and athletes from across Africa clearly contradicted the negative portrayals circulating in the media.

Governor Fubara noted that although Rivers State experienced around six months of disruptions due to political tensions, the situation has since stabilised.

According to him, “I can tell you the truth: more than half of the things you read in the media are not true. Worse things have happened in other states, but because they manage their media, people don’t read about them. But in our case, just to run us down and make us look like the devil with invisible horns, they say anything to portray us in a bad light.”

He added, “Our mission is simple. To change our story, protect our state, and remind everyone that Rivers State is ours and it is safe.”

He commended the joint security agencies for their coordinated efforts in restoring and sustaining peace across the state, enabling his administration to fully resume its activities.

The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting sporting events, announcing plans to revive the Governor’s Cup tournament.

He assured that additional government support would be provided to upgrade facilities at the golf club and further strengthen activities that attract both national and international participation.

In his remarks, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, said the prevailing peace in Rivers State influenced the decision to host the tournament in Port Harcourt. He added that the successful completion of the event had reinforced their confidence in that choice.

Tournament organisers disclosed that golfers from eight African countries, as well as players representing 36 golf clubs across Nigeria, took part in the championship.
