The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it has not formally received communication from Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke regarding his announced resignation from the party. Kabiru Turaki, chairman of the PDP, disclosed this on Tuesday after a National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja.

Adeleke had earlier resigned, citing the party’s ongoing internal crisis as the reason for his departure. Speaking to journalists, Turaki stressed that while the governor is constitutionally free to leave the party, the PDP only learned of his resignation through media reports.

“We have seen online a letter said to be from him resigning from our party, but I tell you that we have not, up to this moment, received any formal indication that he has left,” Turaki said.

The chairman added that Adeleke’s name still appears on the list of aspirants contesting the PDP governorship ticket in Osun State. The party will rely on reports from officials at the primary to determine whether the governor has formally withdrawn from the race.

“As far as we are concerned, even if the letter circulating online is genuine, Gov. Adeleke, like any Nigerian, has the freedom to associate as he wishes,” Turaki said.

Turaki also emphasised that the PDP’s strength lies in its grassroots supporters rather than elected officials, noting that defections in some states have not weakened the party’s base. “Our people have remained with us, and by God’s grace, when elections come, they will show that the PDP is still solid,” he said.

The NWC reviewed and approved congresses in Osun that elected ad hoc delegates and also assessed preparations for the upcoming local government elections in Anambra, expressing confidence in strong performance at the polls.

On other party matters, Turaki said former PDP governors nominated by President Bola Tinubu for ambassadorial roles have not yet notified the party. “If they approach us, we will consider their communication on its merit,” he added.

Addressing national security concerns, Turaki called on the federal government to urgently review Nigeria’s security framework, highlighting the limited control governors have over operations in their states. “We call on the federal government to brace up and begin a comprehensive review of the security framework in this country,” he said.
