Abia House Of Assembly Stops Pensions For Ex-governors, Deputies | READ WHY
The 8th Abia State House of Assembly has passed a bill putting a stop to the payment of pensions to former Governors and Deputies by the state government.
While moving a motion, the sponsor of the bill who is also the Majority Leader and member representing Arochukwu state constituency in the Assembly , Hon. Uchenna Okoro Kalu, posited that the Bill will help reduce the cost of governance in the State, and also save funds that would be used in the development of the State for welfare of the greater majority of Abia people.
The bill is titled; ‘H.A.B 11: The Abia State Governor’s and Deputy Governor’s Pensions Law Repeal Bill 2024’.
Announcing the passage of the bill on Tuesday , March 19, the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa said that the bill would take effect immediately.
Emeruwa, while congratulating members, said the bill would reduce the state’s governance expenses and redirect resources toward development.
He added that the bill once assented to by governor Alex Otti, would be referred to as “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governor’s (Repeal) Law 2024.”
