The  President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio has warned politicians against holding membership in more than one political party, a statement seen by many as a subtle attack at the opposition coalition members particularly the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Akpabio, stated this while speaking during a National Assembly session, stated that it is wrong for someone to claim membership in one party while also participating in the activities of another party.

“You can’t say you’re a member of ADC, but I still remain a member of the Labour Party. You can’t belong to two political parties. It’s only one party that will contest the election,” Akpabio said.

Akpabio’s remarks is seen as a reminder to Obi and others who were present at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) summit and his insistence as a member of the LP, which to many is contradictory leading to speculation on Obi’s political future.

The Senate President, who served as Governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2015, said while the APC welcomes defectors, the health of the country’s democracy depends on a vibrant opposition.

Akpabio also took time to praise the current House of Representatives for maintaining relative peace compared to past legislative sessions, some of which were marred by physical confrontations.
