BREAKING: Many Feared Dead in Abuja and Anambra In A Stampede, As Nigerians Scamper For Food.
At least 10 people have reportedly died, with many more injured in a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday morning.
Recall that only a few days ago, a similar incident had occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, where a stampede at a children’s funfair resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children and left six others critically injured.
Trustbase News gathered that the Saturday incident occurred when residents scrambled to receive palliatives distributed by the church.
The event, organised to provide relief to struggling residents, reportedly drew residents mostly from Mpape, Gishiri Village, and other nearby settlements.
As of the time of filing this report, our correspondent has not been able to reach the spokesperson for the FCT Emergency Management Department, Nkechi Isa, for further details. Although the FCT police command has confirmed.
However, eyewitnesses claim the incident occurred between 7 am and 8 am on Saturday when the crowd surged forward to receive the palliatives.
Meanwhile An unconfirmed number of residents of Okija community in Anambra state has also reportedly lost their lives in another stampede.
Trustbase News learnt that the stampede occurred on Saturday morning during an event for the distribution of rice.
Victims of the stampede are mostly women.
Some victims have reportedly been taken to nearby hospitals.
Charles Aburime, the chief press secretary to the Anambra governor, confirmed the incident when contacted.
Aburime said the state government is monitoring the situation and would soon release a statement.
The incident is coming a few days after over 35 people, mostly children, died during a stampede at a carnival in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.
The Anambra stampede is among the many rice distribution-related mishap in December 2024.
Multiple social media videos seen by TheCable show lifeless bodies laying on the ground after the incident.
In March, some students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, were killed in a stampede during the distribution of rice donated by the state government.
