Historic: Abia, Enugu Communities agree to settle boundary dispute out of court

After nearly 16 years of legal battles, over boundary issues two communities : Achara in Umunneochi Local Government Area, Abia State, and Ugwueme in Awgu Local Government Area, Enugu State, have mutually agreed to settle the matter out-of-court.

The land mark agreement for peaceful settlement for their long-standing boundary dispute was arrived at this Friday 29/8/25 today during the second phase of a peace and reconciliation meeting hosted by the Executive Mayor of Umunneochi, High Chief Sunday Afurobi at Nkwoagu , the Council’s Headquarters.

The meeting which attracted key political stakeholders from the two Local Government Councils of the two states including: Hon. Mathias Nwachi of the Abia State House of Assembly and Hon. Dr. Anthony Okafor of the Enugu State House of Assembly resulted in a unanimous decision by both communities which agreed to end the protracted court case and “settle at home.”

The meeting in a bid to formalize the agreement passed a resolution to form a joint delegation that will attend the next court hearing where representatives from the two communities will officially request the withdrawal of the case from the court.

According to the resolution, the delegation comprises both state assembly members, the Mayor of umunneochi and three representatives from each of the two communities.

For a hitch free implementation, both Communities were mandated to exchange relevant documents to facilitate the ongoing peace process before their next meeting.

In their reactions, delegates from both communities commended Mayor Afurobi for his unbiased and skillful mediation that enabled this resolution.

Hanto Daily News reports that this agreement is a significant and historic step in modern conflict resolution regarding boundary disputes which usually consume lives and property with the consequent tension.
