The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned the public against a graphic circulating online that falsely claims government officials seeking election must resign by March 26.
The Commission in a statement on Friday clarified that the information “did not emanate from INEC” and should be disregarded.
INEC described the graphic as false and misleading. “INEC has not issued any such announcement, and the graphic being circulated is fake and misleading,” the statement said.
The Commission advised members of the public, media organisations, and political stakeholders to ignore the message entirely.
To guide citizens, INEC highlighted its verified communication channels.
“All official information, announcements, and updates from the Commission are published only through INEC’s verified channels, including: The official website: inecnigeria.org, The Commission’s verified social media platforms, Official press releases from the Commission,” the statement read.
The Commission encouraged citizens to cross-check election-related information and avoid sharing unverified content.
“Citizens are strongly encouraged to verify election-related information through these official sources and avoid sharing unverified content capable of misleading the public,” INEC added.
The Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate, timely, and transparent information to the public.
“The Commission remains committed to providing accurate, timely, and transparent information to the public,” the statement said.
Officials warned that citizens should consult only verified sources for election updates and treat unofficial messages with caution.
INEC said the circulation of false graphics could create confusion and mislead political stakeholders, and stressed the importance of relying on official channels for all election announcements.
The Commission concluded by urging the public to follow only INEC’s verified platforms for authoritative election updates.
