BREAKING: Peter Obi sues Tinubu’s aide, demands N5bn damages | Read Full Details

Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour party in the 2023 general election, has demanded an apology from Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to president Bola Tinubu on communication and strategy for defamation of character.

Obi in a letter through his legal representatives, said Onanuga has 72 hours to retract his statement and tender an apology in four national dailies and also pay him five billion naira as damages.

Recall that Onanuga had called for the arrest of Obi, alleging that he and his supporters are behind the planned nationwide protest against bad governance.

Responding, Obi denied the allegations, adding that Onanuga’s statement was a plot to demean, humiliate and ridicule him before right thinking people in the society.

The letter reads in part;

“RE. REVEALED: PETER OBI’S SUPPORTERS ARE THE PEOPLE PLANNING MAYHEM IN NIGERIA

We have been briefed and our services retained by Mr. Peter Obi, whom we shall.
hereinafter refer to as our Client, and upon whose specific instructions this
correspondence is founded.
Our Client’s attention has been drawn to a widely circulated and damaging
publication titled: REVEALED: Peter Obi’s supporters are the people planning mayhem
in Nigeria: Obi should be held responsible for anarchy that was published on your verified
“X*(formerly Twitter) handle “@aonanuga1956” on the 20h of July 2024. at about 8:54
AM. This publication was also circulated on various social media platforms including “X”,
WhatsApp” Facebook as well as various online and print media.

“……….Our Client also is making an unequivocal demand for monetary damage of NS,000,000,000 (Five Billion Naira) only the embarrassment your defamatory publication has caused him and his family.

Take Notice that in the event of your failure to meet the demands set out above,

our Client shall be constrained to approach a Court of competent jurisdiction and take legal action against you for defamation and libel. Be advised accordingly.”
