Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), over what it described as “the apparently ongoing unlawful demolitions of the so-called shanties and the attacks on beggars in Abuja.”

SERAP in a statement argued that the actions violated the rights of vulnerable communities and called on the minister to “immediately halt the demolitions and attacks and respect the rule of law.”

It also said that Wike’s approach undermined due process and targeted impoverished individuals who were already facing hardship.

Through this legal action, SERAP is seeking a court order to compel the minister to stop these activities, insisting that “the minister must immediately halt the demolitions and attacks and respect the rule of law.”

The statement reads, “We’re suing Nyesom Wike, minister of the FCT over the apparently ongoing unlawful demolitions of the so-called shanties and the attacks on beggars in Abuja.

“The minister must immediately halt the demolitions and attacks and respect the rule of law.”

Meanwhile, there were reports that some residents of the FCT on November 8 protested against the alleged seizure of land from poor people by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

The aggrieved residents alongside human rights activists berated the FCT administration under Wike’s leadership for “grabbing land in communities dominated by poor people”.

A lawyer and human rights activist, who was among the protesters, Mr Deji Adeyanju, had urged President Bola Tinubu to stop the FCT minister from implementing wicked policies that keep displacing hundreds of residents from their homes.

Also, a social media influencer, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, had condemned the oppression of the poor FCT residents whose land had been taken by Wike’s administration.
