President Bola Tinubu has signed the south-east and north-west development commission bills into law.

The south-east development commission bill was sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives cum member representing Bende federal constituency of Abia state, Benjamin Kalu.

Similarly, the deputy senate president, Jibrin Barau, sponsored the North west development commission bill.

The bills were passed by the senate and house of representatives respectively and transmitted to the president in June for assent.

With the signing into law, the commissions will receive funds to execute projects in the geopolitical zone.

The funds are also earmarked for environment challenges like erosion, reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads in Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, Anambra and roads in the North West states.

Reacting, Kalu in a statement issued on Wednesday by his chief press secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, said the commission will “rehabilitate Igbo land” and foster unity among the people.

On his own part, Jibrin Barau, said the signing is a “testament” to Tinubu’s “commitment to addressing the challenges facing the north-west geopolitical zone and indeed all parts of the country”.
