Tottenham Sack Thomas Frank After Eight Months Amid Relegation Fears – Arise News
Thomas Frank has been sacked as Tottenham Hotspur head coach after just 8 months in charge, with the club 16th in the Premier League and hovering 5 points above the relegation zone.
Spurs confirmed the decision on Wednesday following Tuesday’s 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United, a result that extended their winless league run to 8 matches.
“The club has taken the decision to make a change in the Men’s Head Coach position and Thomas Frank will leave today,” a club statement read.
“Thomas was appointed in June 2025, and we have been determined to give him the time and support needed to build for the future together.
“However, results and performances have led the board to conclude that a change at this point in the season is necessary.
“Throughout his time at the club, Thomas has conducted himself with unwavering commitment, giving everything in his efforts to move the club forward. We would like to thank him for his contribution and wish him every success in the future.”
Frank, 52, was subjected to chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” from sections of the home support during the Newcastle defeat, with fans also singing the name of former manager Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs slumped to their 11th league defeat of the season.
Spurs have won just 2 of their past 17 league matches, collecting 11 points in that period. The current 8 game winless run is their longest in the Premier League since October 2008.
Sources told ESPN that chief executive Vinai Venkatesham recommended the decision to ownership on Tuesday night after the match, with an interim appointment now considered more likely in the short term. A longer statement from Venkatesham is expected later on Wednesday.
The board had been reluctant to act, acknowledging that several structural issues predated Frank’s arrival and that he had been hampered by a high number of injuries.
Frank oversaw a modest upturn early in the season, narrowly losing the UEFA Super Cup final to Paris Saint-Germain and winning 6 of his first 16 league matches. He also guided Spurs to the Champions League round of 16 after a fourth place finish in the group stage.
However, domestic form deteriorated sharply. Tottenham were knocked out of the EFL Cup in the fourth round by Newcastle and eliminated from the FA Cup in the third round by Aston Villa. They have won just 2 league games at home all season.
The atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has grown increasingly toxic, compounded by off field tension after captain Cristian Romero criticised the club’s hierarchy in a social media post minutes after the transfer window closed.
Last season, under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs finished 17th but lifted the Europa League trophy, ending a 17 year wait for silverware with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final.
Frank’s dismissal marks the first managerial sacking of the post Daniel Levy era after Levy stepped down in September, with Enic, the family investment vehicle of billionaire Joe Lewis, assuming a more prominent role in the club’s leadership.
