The Court of Appeal sitting in Benin has upheld Barrister Julius Abure as the lawful National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).

This verdict follows a prolonged internal conflict over the party’s leadership, which has resulted in numerous legal disputes surrounding the chairmanship.

The judgment was delivered on 5th October, by a panel of three justices: Justice Theresa Ngolika Orji Abadua, Justice Fatima Omoro Akinbami, and Justice Sybil O. Nwaka-Gbagi. Their unanimous decision dismissed the appeal brought by Mr. Lucky Shaibu, who had previously challenged Abure’s leadership.

The court ruled that a single individual could not suspend the national chairman in accordance with the Labour Party’s constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act. In its ruling, the court equally dismissed all challenges against Abure’s position, solidifying his status as the rightful leader of the party on a national scale.

The decision is anticipated to put an end to the ongoing leadership crisis that has destabilized the Labour Party in recent months.
