As Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day, Ceekay Igara, the National Vice Chairman,South East, of the Labour Party, has called for national reflection on the state of the country’s democracy, while urging renewed commitment to reform, transparency, and inclusive governance.
In a statement released to mark the occasion, Igara described the day as a moment of national pride, but also one that should remind Nigerians of the work still to be done to strengthen democratic institutions and uphold the rule of law.
“Today, we celebrate Democracy Day, a milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards democratic governance,” Igara said. “While we commemorate this significant day, we also acknowledge that our democracy is still a work in progress.”
He pointed out that the nation continues to grapple with major issues including insecurity, corruption, electoral malpractice, and inequality all of which pose serious threats to democratic consolidation.
“We recognize the lapses that still exist,” he continued. “However, we remain optimistic about the future and committed to building a better Nigeria for all.”
Igara emphasized the need to strengthen institutions, promote accountability, and amplify the voices of ordinary Nigerians in governance processes.
“As we reflect on our progress, we must also confront the realities that hinder our growth,” he stated. “The way forward requires collective effort and commitment.”
The Labour Party leader called on both leaders and citizens to work together in defending democratic ideals and addressing the country’s pressing challenges.
“Let’s use this occasion to recommit ourselves to the ideals of democracy, equality, justice, and freedom,” he concluded.
