Jonny Evans Gets New Job At Manchester United After Retiring From Football
Former Northern Ireland defender, Jonny Evans has been appointed as the head of loans and pathways at Manchester United after announcing his retirement from football.
Jonny Evans is a product of the Manchester United youth system and has played on loan at different clubs before he decided to leave Old Trafford permanently in 2015.
Evans, 37, has had two loan spells at Sunderland and has played for West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City in the Premier League.
The retired Ireland international returned to Manchester United after eight years away under the reign of coach Erik ten Hag, first on a one-year contract. He extended his stay at Old Trafford after helping the club to win the 2024 FA Cup.
Before bowing out of football earlier today, June 30, Jonny Evans made a combined 241 appearances for the Red Devils. He helped the club to win three Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Club World Cup, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
He played 107 times for the Northern Ireland national team from 2006 to 2024, scoring six goals and serving as the team’s captain in 15 games.
“I want to officially announce my retirement from my playing career, not with sadness, but with pride, gratitude and excitement for the next chapter ahead,” Evans told Manchester United’s website.
“I’ll be forever indebted to the managers, coaches, staff and, of course, my team-mates, that I have had the privilege of working alongside throughout my 20 years in professional football.”
Jonny Evans expressed his excitement about his new role at Manchester United, which will see him work directly with director of football Jason Wilcox to maximise player development and prepare young talent for the first team.
He said, “Having had experience of loans myself, I know the crucial role that they can play within a player’s development. I am excited to help further develop the pathway to our first team and continue the legacy of young players thriving at Manchester United.”
Jason Wilcox noted: “Jonny is the perfect role model for our young players.
“His knowledge of what it takes to succeed at Manchester United will be of great benefit to each of them as we continue to develop world-class talent capable of performing in our first team.”
