FINALLY REVEALED: Why Plateau School Building Collapsed | Read Details
The cause of the Saint Academy School building collapse in the Busa Buji area of Jos, Plateau State, has been revealed.
According to the Director General of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Samson Duna, at a press briefing on Tuesday in Jos, substandard materials and poor construction work led to the collapse.
“The committee discovered that the quantity of concrete was in doubt because there was no bond between the concrete and the steel reinforcement.
“The slab reinforcement anchorage provided was inadequate, and the sizes of the footing (foundation) provided were less than the required number of 1200 mm x 1200 mm,” he said.
The federal government had directed the NBRRI to constitute a panel to look into the remote and immediate cause of the building collapse and make recommendations in line with the mandate of the institute.
A ten-man panel headed by Prof Fedrick Job of the Building Department at the University of Jos has one month to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the school building collapse.
According to the Plateau State Government, 22 persons died and 132 persons were injured after the school building collapsed last Friday.
