Recall that the LG Elections in Abia State has been engulfed with controversies recently as the Governor of the State, His Excellency Dr Alex Otti being accused of truncating Democratic process for the election despite his assurances to Abians while swearing in the Chairman and Board members of the Abia Electoral Umpire.

Hopes were high as Governor Otti assured Abians that his administration is funded on competence, accountability and responsibility, as he urged the then newly appointed ABSIEC Chairman and Board members not to bow to the pressure of compromise as such will amount to suicide.
“you will come under heavy pressure. People would want you to compromise. They will bring money to you. They will promise you heaven on earth but you must know that the very day you succumb, you would have committed suicide and will just be a matter of time before you find your way out. I do know that all of you are going to excel in this assignment”

Meanwhile, the Chairman of ABSIEC, Prof. George Chima, had also pledged to ensure a fair and credible process, he gave the assurance while unveiling the electoral timetable during a meeting with the 19 political parties in the state, in the presence of the security officials and members of the state House of Assembly.

With these assurances yet the people of Abia are lamenting with the manners and high-handedness on those perceived to be opposing the anointed candidates of the Governor, not excluding the members and leaders of the Labour Party whose platform won the 2023 Governorship election in the State.

The Zenith Labour Party is seen to have been the new platform for the preferred Candidates of the Governor and those loyal to him. It is equally of note and of concerns to many that the ZLP flagged off their campaigns in Abia State without adherence to ABSIEC rules for candidates waiting for the commission to publish names of candidates before campaigning.

Observers and Abians says they are waiting to see the outcome of the elections come November 2.
