The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has opened up on why the union suspended its two-week warning strike.

ASUU said it wanted to grant the federal government one month to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and address other outstanding issues affecting the university system.

DAILY POST reports that ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the suspension on Wednesday at a press briefing in Abuja, on behalf of the varsity workers.

Piwuna stated that the decision came after ASUU had productive engagements with the Nigerian government and interventions from the National Assembly.

Recall that the ASUU national leadership met on Tuesday to evaluate its position on the ongoing strike by its members.

Piwuna said the union declared the warning strike on October 13, 2025, due to the government’s failure to act on repeated appeals to resolve the lingering renegotiation of the 2009 agreement and other welfare-related matters.

The ASUU President also hinted that the government re-engaged the union through a team led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed.

According to him, although all issues were not fully resolved, significant progress was recorded compared to the pre-strike situation.

Piwuna further commended the intervention of the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund, and Labour, as well as the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, for their role in facilitating dialogue between both parties.
