CAF to launch new WAFCON trophy Wednesday
The Confederation of African Football, CAF, will launch a new trophy for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON, on Wednesday, DAILY POST reports.
The new trophy will be launched in Morocco, hosts of this year’s edition of the biennial competition.
CAF president, Patrice Motsepe has consistently promised to revamp women’s football in Africa.
The trophy launch is part of Motsepe’s vision to grow the game on the continent.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons won the old trophy nine times, Equatorial Guinea twice, while current holders Banyana Banyana of South Africa have claimed the title once.
The WAFCON 2024 finals will be staged in Morocco from Saturday, 5 July to Saturday, 26 July.
The Atlas Lionesses of Morocco, and Copper Queens of Zambia will clash in the tournament’s opening fixture on Saturday.
