A devastating building collapse occurred in Awka, Anambra State, on Wednesday evening, but fortunately, no lives were lost. The three-storey building, located near Diamond Pizza and opposite Five Star Eatery along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, was still under construction and had reached the roofing level when it collapsed at around 5:25 pm.
Eyewitnesses described hearing a series of thunderous sounds before rushing out to discover the building had collapsed completely. Rescue operations commenced immediately, with responders pulling victims from the rubble. Commuters and passersby also lent a hand, assisting those injured in the disaster.
Officials from the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) swiftly visited the site to assess the situation. The agency has since established a panel of inquiry to investigate the causes of the collapse, with further details to be released as the situation unfolds.
